Janssen Pharmaceutica, Xian-Janssen Pharmaceutical and the Qinshihuang Terracotta Army Museum of Xian sign a NEW agreement to establish a world-class research laboratory for conservation and restoration of relics

Terracotta Army Museum now officially declared mold-free

17th October 2006, Xian - Janssen Pharmaceutica, Xian-Janssen Pharmaceutical, and the Qinshihuang Terracotta Army Museum of Xian in China today signed a new cooperation agreement for the creation of a world-class research lab for the conservation and restoration of relics and heritage. The agreement will also include the sharing of Janssen's innovative technology for conservation and restoration with Chinese scientists.

In addition, the agreement will lead to the upgrading of the museum's current scientific research laboratory - the Dr. Paul Janssen Laboratory for Advanced Material Protection Research. The laboratory first officially opened on June 5, 2001 - will develop expertise in ancient polychrome pottery research and become a scientific-technical research center on the conservation of relics and as a training centre for cultural relics conservation. The lab will be equipped with advanced instruments, offer reliable data and put conservation into practice effectively. The laboratory will also carry out research on the environmental physico-chemical factors that influence the conservation of cultural relics.

The signing ceremony took place in Xian in the presence of

  • Mr. Yuan Chunqing, the Governor of the Shaanxi Province
  • Mr. Paul Stoffels, Company Group Chairman Worldwide Research & Development, Johnson & Johnson
  • Mr. Wu Yongqi, Director of the Terracotta Army Museum of Xian
  • Mr. Pen Hok Cheah, President of Xian-Janssen

The agreement stipulates a five-year cooperation period between 2007 and 2011, and allows specifically for the creation of

  • A multifunctional lab for relics restoration
  • An analytical laboratory for materials pertaining to cultural relics, and
  • A laboratory for the study of the preservation of relics.

This project will be fully funded by Janssen in the form of cash, instruments and equipment, and the training of the Museum technical staff. In addition, further scientific research on the restoration of relics will be undertaken.

Under the terms of the agreement, Janssen will also establish

  • A Dr. Paul Janssen Culture Relic Research & Protection Center
  • Create the first-ever Emperor Qin Shihuang Terracotta Army Museum - Dr. Paul Janssen Culture Relic Fund and
  • The Emperor Qin Shihuang Terracotta Army Museum - Dr. Paul Janssen Conservation Award.

The new cooperation agreement follows a previous three-year contract, signed in September 2000 between Janssen and the Museum, aimed at finding out which molds had caused the damage to the Terracotta Warriors and how further decay could be prevented. That first agreement led to the implementation of effective programs to eradicate the fungal problem as well as the establishment of the Dr. Paul Janssen Laboratory for Advanced Material Protection Research. The laboratory is considered as one of the most advanced mycology laboratories in China. It not only laid the foundation for mildew prevention research in the field of terracotta but also created new methods of mildew prevention for ancient relics of silk, wood, bronze ware and ancient mummified corpses.
