ECONEA™, A COPPER FREE ANTIFOULING AGENT, APPROVED FOR USE IN INTERLUX ANTIFOULING PAINTS
First Pleasure Craft Registration Containing Econea™Titusville, NJ – Janssen Preservation and Material Protection announced today that Interlux, has received U.S. product registration approval from the Environmental Protection Agency for an antifouling paint product formulated with ECONEA™, a new, copper free antifouling agent developed by Janssen. The new product will be marketed as part of the Pacifica brand line and will be available for pleasure craft use. “Janssen is proud that ECONEA™ containing paints are now available as an alternative to antifouling paint containing copper,” says Dave Helmer, Director at Janssen PMP. “Paints formulated with ECONEA™ not only provide exceptional protection from aquatic growth, they help improve vessel appearance, speed, and fuel efficiency while being an option for the boat owner interested in a copper free paint.” Research has shown that ECONEA™ provides antifouling protection at low usage levels and can be effectively used on aluminum hulls without the risk of galvanic corrosion. ECONEA™ has been extensively tested around the world, and shows promise for other antifouling applications, such as stationary structures. Research is underway to assess its potential in ballast water treatment, macrofouling control in water intake systems of coastal power plants, antifouling protection of polymeric materials in a marine environment, and other biofouling applications.
