MARINE ANTIFOULING PAINTS
Fouling of ships by marine organisms such as barnacles and seaweed leads to increased frictional resistance, which results in a loss of speed and/or increased fuel consumption and air emissions.
We offer a range of antifouling agents for use as additives in antifouling paints to be applied on ship hulls or other marine structures. Our antifouling products make a significant contribution to optimize the operational efficiency of the worldwide commercial and naval fleets.
ECONEA® is a metal-free antifouling agent which exhibits a broad spectrum of activity against hard-shelled and soft-bodied invertebrate animal fouling organisms including barnacles, hydroids, mussels, oysters and tube worms. Due to the chemical and physical stability of ECONEA® in coatings, combined with its low water solubility and leachability, ECONEA® containing antifouling paints can often be specified for multi-year dry-docking intervals comparable to those achieved with copper-based products.

Zinc PYRION™ is a highly effective and well-established antifouling agent for the control of soft fouling marine organisms such as seaweed as well as bacterial and diatomaceous slimes. It is often combined with other marine antifoulants as a “booster” to lower copper use levels and with ECONEA for broad spectrum activity.
Nets which are used by the fish farming industry are prone to marine biofouling. Fouled nets lead to a reduced water exchange where anoxic waters can cause fish mortality. Fouled nets can also constitute preferred habitats for ‘cleaner fish’ (Wrasse sp.), which are employed as a means of biological control for sea lice on salmon- when feeding around the fouled nets, the ‘cleaner fish’ fulfill their intended purpose less effectively.
To prevent biofouling, fish farmers mostly use nets which have been impregnated by a net coating product having antifouling properties.
ECONEA® is highly effective against hydroids and other fouling organisms which are prevalent on aquaculture net cages. The use of ECONEA® in net coatings can help fish farmers to avoid extra net changes and/or in situ net cleaning.
